Sustainability is our Foundation
We appreciate that ‘sustainability’ means many different things to different people. And that in the home building sector sustainability metrics and expectations are ever changing and often dictated by others. New materials, new understandings, and new regulations – alongside cost and personal priorities – all impact upon what can be achieved and how.
For over 50 years, Border Oak has been passionate about sustainable design and construction, continually innovating and refining our approach. We believe that commissioning a bespoke home—and choosing an oak frame—is one of the most sustainable ways to build, creating beautiful, long-lasting buildings designed to endure for centuries while remaining adaptable, reusable, and kind to the environment.
Our Workshops & Offices
Every Border Oak frame is handcrafted using traditional English carpentry techniques, minimising reliance on energy-intensive machinery. Our workshops reflect the same philosophy, combining sensitively repurposed buildings with highly sustainable new spaces, powered by renewable technologies including solar PV and air source heat pumps.
Sustainability runs through every aspect of our business, from reusing and retrofitting existing buildings to recycling surplus materials and reducing waste in our workshops.
Our Green Oak
Green Oak is widely regarded one of the most ecological construction products available when measured against all metrics – not least embodied energy, longevity and carbon sequestered. Oak is incredibly strong without any treatment and requires little energy to convert from a tree to a building material. Well made and cared for oak frames lasts for centuries and can be repurposed infinitely.
Border Oak are proud to be one of only a small handful of construction companies in the UK who are fully FSC® or PEFC certified for the supply of timber. In addition we have a robust ethical procurement policy endorsed by our auditors which applied to everything we buy. The long growing time and sustainable management of our partner oak farms also provides a stable and rich habitat, and enables ethical harvesting alongside our rigorous approach to traceability. Renewables, Technologies & a Typical Border Oak Project
Energy is a fast-changing sector and the UK grid is expected to become increasingly low carbon in the coming years. We regularly integrate renewable technologies such as PV, air and ground source heat pumps, and solar thermal systems, but our core focus remains a fabric-first approach—prioritising the performance, detailing and construction quality of the building itself over added technologies. This ensures homes are efficient, comfortable and built for long-term resilience.
A typical Border Oak project may include:

Our Border Oak Farm
At our small farm in North Herefordshire, we manage the land using organic and regenerative principles, with nature and biodiversity at the heart of everything we do. We are restoring a rare heritage orchard through a DEFRA-funded project, creating new orchards, re-establishing traditional meadows and wet woodland, planting native hedgerows, and improving habitats to support wildlife, soil health and water quality.
This commitment extends beyond the farm and into every Border Oak project. We regularly incorporate new hedgerows, trees, orchards and wildflower meadows into our developments, and since 2019 have been at the forefront of nutrient neutrality and phosphate reduction initiatives within the Lugg and Wye catchment. Together, these efforts reflect our long-term commitment to protecting and enhancing the natural environment alongside creating exceptional homes.
