Herefordshire Farmhouse
With a location as spectacular as this we all felt a deep sense of responsibility to create a beautiful property – one that will positively contribute to the outstanding landscape for centuries to come, yet also function brilliantly as a working farmhouse and home for a lovely young local family. The design is both classical and of its time – designed to be adaptable and welcoming, and to capture the spectacular views over Herefordshire farmland.

A classical Border Oak farmhouse, arranged in a T shaped from, with a cross wing and perpendicular bays which echoes traditional farmhouse arrangements from the 15th Century. This bespoke design also has a second weatherboarded ‘barn’ cross wing which adds considerable further space (including farm office and work spaces) without diluting the primary vernacular forms.
Specifically designed to sit within the exquisite back drop of rolling Herefordshire fields and woodland, but to also work well for young family who relocated their farming enterprise to the site. The family, with the help of Border Oak and an agricultural agent, were granted permission for an Agriculturally Tied Dwelling (a special type of planning approval where the occupants must work in farming in order to meet the conditions of the approval) at committee.
With three young children, two busy jobs and a farm to run, our clients chose a complete build package from Border Oak – where they were able to specify all the detail and materials, but the house would be fully built and project managed for them by us, for a fixed price.
The externals are characterised by exposed oak framing with lime rendered infill panels. This is complemented by areas of hand made brick, a clay tile roof, oak joinery and a weatherboarded annex. The front is punctuated by a Border Oak porch whilst the rear includes a wonderful oak garden room. The natural tones and textures of the palette have been chosen to reflect the land around the home.
A large farmhouse kitchen sits in the middle of the house, with a walk in pantry, utility room, boot room, study and ground floor shower room. The kitchen is open to the valuted oak framed and fully glazed garden room – with unbeatable views over wheat fields and forests.

We needed a family home that was also a working farmhouse, and would be adaptable as our children grew and our working lives changed. We wanted a home that was informal, but also classical and timeless.”
