John and Patsy were delighted to hear that they had been awarded two prizes in the Homebuilding and Renovating Awards – winning best self build home and Readers Choice.
John, Border Oak founder, and Patsy had lived in the first Border Oak home ever built for more than 40 years, but following a period of ill health John decided to downsize and build a new home just a few hundreds yards away in an old apple orchard in the village where he was born.
Redgate House is an eccentric reflection of all that John loved – the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement, vernacular design, natural materials and authentic craftsmanship. With a bit of fun added in.

John and Patsy retained the remaining apple and pear trees and planted a wild flower meadow alongside further fruit trees and new hedges.

The primary section of the ground floor is mainly open plan – but with tucked away spaces so that not everything is on show from all points.

John designed the house to form a sunny courtyard at the rear with bifold doors.

Combining newly made furniture pieces with their existing antiques meant that the house felt like home

The oak frame was lime waxed to give a light finish

Patsy and John chose to introduce a range of colours and textures within the interior, working along side interior designer Hannah Llewellyn to bring it together.

Externally the house has been designed to showcase a range of natural materials and weather softly into the edge of village location.
